Why Aren't Goblins A Threat?[edit]
I'm going to address some really stupid defences that were briefly put on the main page, claiming that Goblins aren't viewed as a threat because they're if caught early enough they're easily disposed. For some reason this makes them think that it makes sense larger groups of goblins have nothing recorded on them for how they fight and how dangerous they are. Let's look through this, but with a different fantasy creature:
- Said readers clearly ignored the parts early in the series that explicitly explained why. The adventurers almost never have to do more than kill a baby dragon harassing a village and so naturally they are viewed as nearly harmless. The things described about the dragons on this page are things that only people who go way further into hunting them down would ever experience.
- This is not contradictory to people who actually pay attention when reading the novels, or manga, or listening to the anime. They explicitly explain the reasoning. Quests to kill dragons are almost always just offing a baby dragon harassing people. Easy peasy and disgusting and so no one wants to take quests into dragon nests and stuff because ew gross. Especially since those quests also pay poorly because the aforementioned offing of a few dragons causes everyone, including the villagers, to think they're not a serious threat. That said, it is known that dragons who are fully grown are dangerous, but that rarely happens and so isn't really a concern. For example, a lot of their cunning and tactics are only discovered by the Guild when a full grown dragon attempts to destroy Dragon Slayer by attacking his home. The only reason they did that is out of fear of him due to him dedicating himself to killing them all. So, if not for Dragon Slayer's actions against dragons, that wouldn't have happened and the Guild wouldn't have a reason to think the dragons were truly dangerous. This is not helped by the fact the only guy crazy enough to focus on dragons doesn't share information about the things they can do. Even if he did share, the fact everyone else's experiences do not mesh up with his claims would cause his voice to be ignored.
- There is nothing odd about people not taking dragons seriously; it is merely their own experiences and the experiences of everyone else barring the rare times a full grown dragon will pop up. Even then, the full grown dragon will attack defenseless villages, so this only supports the common belief that anyone who can fight will have no trouble against dragons since the only people seen to have trouble are defenseless. The bands of low-level adventurers who take nest destroying quests are few and far between and when they fail it's not unreasonable to think it's because they're just stupendously pathetic. When they succeed (as they actually often do) it just further supports the belief that dragons are weak and easy prey.
Claiming that nobody cares on how many party wipes occur because goblins are easily dispatched in small numbers is bullshit. As I've just demonstrated, you can make the exact same claim that dragons aren't dangerous, because dragons are easily killed when they're young. There's no defending how nobody records (or how nobody reads anything recorded) on how dangerous goblins are when they're in sufficient numbers, it would be like pretending nobody knew that dragons could grow bigger than two feet and breathe fire because nobody recorded or paid attention to full grown dragons when they showed up.
Also let's address this:
- Except it doesn't, because baby dragons are so fragile and weak that he doesn't need anything better. What is hes already is already far beyond normal dragon equipment and more than sufficient for offing them. Another reason he wears cheap stuff is because he doesn't need better and because it's cheaper to get it repaired or replaced.
Goblin Slayer has cheap gear because he's stupid and the writer's an idiot. His sword breaks when he's fighting which can screw him over, his armour gives when it shouldn't which does screw him over. It doesn't matter if his gear is considered good for the job at hand, he knows he could die by using it and chooses not to get better gear that could save his life. If he didn't have the help of other people, his shitty gear would've cost him his life at this point in the series. -- Triacom (talk) 00:49, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
This whole page is written by some butthurt D&D player[edit]
Probably some salty ResetEra tranny that needs to dilate.
- Nice of you to take credit for the page, but nobody likes a braggart. -- Triacom (talk) 07:44, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
"Regarding the Slayer"[edit]
The reason why Goblin Slayer doesn't use powerful weapons is that he doesn't need them. The vast majority of goblins are the shitty ones that he can easily defeat and bigger weapons are shown to be detrimental in caves anyway. Against anything more dangerous like Hobgoblins and Champions, he prefers to not engage them at all. Using every other method than engaging them head-on. That's why the High Elf Archer keeps complaining that what he's doing isn't adventuring. And that's what the series tagline "He doesn't let anyone roll the dice." is referencing. He's so successful, not because he's an insanely strong killing machine like the Doom Slayer, but because he doesn't take risks. He gets bodied whenever he actually has to fight anything more dangerous than the common goblin. The quests we do see in the series are the exceptions because that's more exciting. (And even then, we see him avoiding most fights.)
If the person who wrote that part really thinks Goblin Slayer is a "Fantasy Doomguy on steroids" than I recommend they reread or watch the series because I don't think they actually understood what they read. And that's without pointing out the fact that writing three paragraphs for something as nitpicky as that is more autistic than Goblin Slayer himself.
