Background[edit]

If she remembered, Anja would know that she spent her childhood on the Blessed Isle, the rigors of being a prospective member of the Dragon-Blooded Host shaping her into a knowledgeable, intellectual girl who read entire books about things their parents hadn't ever heard of, yet with enough sensitivity to enjoy and create art. She'd also remember a fateful day, when her parents were accused of a crime she didn't think they committed, how they were sentenced to death. She'd remember being spared of that fate but thrown to the streets, orphan, alone and rejected, with no chance to survive at all.

But there's no point in remembering, Anja knows that. She was gifted with a particularly powerful and experienced shard, and her mortal mind wasn't able to hold together during the experience. Anja understood now, with unnatural stoicism, that Creation was a failed experiment of her patrons, and that in due time she'd be able to do something about it.

Yet when she first entered Malfeas she understood she had been there before. In fact, it looked like she even had some property there. She entered the giant clock tower she knew was hers and started training the strength she knew she once had. She didn't leave the Demon City in years, honing body and mind to the limit, digging up forbidden knowledge, rediscovering her First Age martial skills, and even sparring against Ligier's creations a few times to help the Demon Prince test the limits of his brilliance. Anja's inhuman ability to endure this deadly routine greatly pleased her patron Yozi, She Who Lives in Her Name, who tutored her in lost First Age lore. And, while her awkwardly outgoing First Age personality sometimes got her in weird situations, her refined singing and dancing gave her some recognition among part of the demon population.

  • Starmetal Perfected Kata Bracers (Artifact ●●●●): Adds Essence to Accuracy, Damage and Defense when using a Form charm, and reduce costs of charms of that style by 2 motes. Can choose to deal lethal or bashing damage.

  • Devil Hand System (Artifact ●●●●● ●●●●● Sapience ●●● total): Anja is obsessed with self-improvement. This has led her to replace parts of her own body with an important number of prosthetic enhancements, which she dubs the "Devil Hand System". It has the following components:
    • Custom Issue Battle Armor Subsystem (Artifact ●●●●●): Anja's skin and muscles have been reinforced with vitriol and weaved metal implants made with the five magic materials. Anja gains bonuses similar to those of a Hellforged Battle Armor, with a few differences. Additionally, when Anja's Viridian Legend Exoskeleton charm is active,
      • Improved Neural Network: Anja gains a +2 bonus to Awareness. She can reflexively activate Essence sight for three motes per scene, which also allows her to see unmanifested spirits, ghosts, living beings, enchanted objects, demesnes and manses.
      • Intramuscular Fibers: +2 dots to Strength for feats of strength, calculating jump distance and inflicting damage with attacks.
      • Quadriceps Boosting Subsystem: Doubled movement rate; 10mph marching movement rate.
      • Essence Distortion Field: +2 bonus to Stealth while moving or +3 while stationary, defending against Essence sight.
      • Enhanced Healing: Anja heals one level of bashing damage every tick and one level of lethal damage every hour.
      • Subdermal Armor While it mimics many of the properties of Hellforged Battle Armor, this subsystem isn't really a suit of plate mail. Accordingly, it has no Hardness score, but doesn't count as armor for the purpose of martial arts charms.
      • Essence Shield: By spending four motes of Essence, Anja increases her DV by two against both melee and ranged attacks for one scene.
      • Glory of Battle: Anja increases the value of any stunt bonus relating to flashy, destructive, or forceful actions by one.
    • Devil Arm (Artifact ●●●●●): Anja gains a +10 bonus to Strength to actions using the right arm. These dice count against the dice limit for Excellencies.
      • Urge: Kill every Sidereal martial artist.
      • Charms:
        • Hurry Home: 5m, Simple, Instant. Return to Malfeas, to the main room of the Clock Tower.
        • Sheathing the Material Form: 2m/2B+1L, Simple (Combo-Basic), One scene. For every 2 motes spent, increase lethal soak and hardness by 1 and bashing soak by 2. Can't spend more than (Essence x Valor). Works only against human (this includes Exalts).
        • Loom Stride: 4m, Reflexive (Combo-OK), Instant. With a successful (Wits + Conviction) roll, replace a move action with a teleport of up to (Essence x Conviction) yards. Successes can be used to reestablish surprise.
        • Meat of Broken Flesh: 1m, Supplemental (Combo-OK), Instant. If the attack deals damage, the target loses (Essence) motes, and Anja gains the same amount (half if the attack dealt bashing damage). Can't gain more than (Essence + Temperance) motes during one normal action.
        • Spirit-Cutting: 2m, Supplemental (Combo-OK), Instant. The attack affects the immaterial.
        • Principle of Motion: 5m 1wp, Simple (Speed 6 DV -2), Indefinite. Bank 10 actions for later use.

Manses and Hearthstones[edit]

Anja has a hearthstone amulet in each of her ankles. One of them socketed with a Gem of Perfect Mobility, which Anja uses to speed up her crafting. The other has a Gem of Adamant Skin, but its power is rerouted to Anja's armor subsystem and she gains no additional benefit from it.

  • The Clock Tower: A tall clock tower, this building is one of the highest points in Malfeas. Apart from having a giant, fully functional clock inside and a suitable residence for the Occult-inclined, it's programmed to broadcast a song at midnight once a week, letting demons in the neighborhood get a slight sense of the flow of time outside. Anja's First Age incarnation made the manse to suit her needs, and used to sing herself at the indicated times. She took enormous pride of being one of the few beings allowed to own a clock in Malfeas, and Anja is well aware of the privilege having the device is.

Merits, Mutations and Flaws[edit]

  • Amnesia: Anja doesn't remember her life before her exaltation. The ones who conspired against her family think she has been dead for years, but they might take steps against her if they realize she's still alive and well.
  • Throwback: The overwhelming force of personality of Anja's First Age incarnation wasn't pruned from her shard, and she has some trouble controlling it. Anja must check for control whenever she meets, observes or interacts with any of her past life's intimacies, which include singing and dancing, among others. Anja's particularly prone to dancing around Malfeas whenever she meets him.
  • Slow Healing: Anja's body is very resistant to change. So, while injuring her isn't easy, she also takes twice as usual to heal her wounds.
  • Tough: Anja adds two dots to Strength and one dot to Stamina, and she gains one -1 and two -2 health levels. She may soak lethal damage with her entire Stamina.
  • Brutal Attack: Anja's combat style relies on overwhelming her opponent with superior power. She can add her Strength instead of her Dexterity to her Melee or Martial Arts rolls and when using her Infernal Monster charms.
