Background[edit]

Sern was not always quite so old. He grew up in one of the many outlying areas of Wavecrest as an orphan. It wasn't that hard, it wasn't that particularly great either - scraping away to make his life not quite so miserable. He grew up among other street urchins and eventually made himself their leader of sorts. That, however, was many many years ago. Now edging towards the end of middle age, Sern finds himself in a particularly strange position. While he never really wanted to be a hero - one day heroism simply hefted itself upon him. After many years traversing the seas around the western archipelago, he had eventually become known as "The Old Vagabond," never staying with the same crew or ship between seasons. Eventually, the ship he had decided to throw in with came under attack by a group of Raksha posing as sirens. All of the other men aboard his ship fell under their spell almost immediately, but Sern - being a rather older man had in his time already tasted more than his fair share of women.

He knew these beasts were not here to lie in bed with him, not there to bring him pleasure but to eat his own. He steeled his resolve against them, took up the iron swords kept aboard the ship, and took to setting the Raksha running. It did not take long. As the last one fled, he was struck with an immense sense of heroism.. one that he had hoped he would never feel again. The sun had chosen him to be a warrior, to carry the banner of battle first, and to leave the battle last. He - wasn't all that pleased with this turn of events, but what are you going to do? He did his best to hide his nature, and returned to his old life again... seeking out work and adventure from the relative safety of the ships.

Who was he to turn down an offer to go with the expeditionary force?
