Everyone's familiar with the Paladin Class. It's a tried and true trope in most tabletop games to have a warrior who fights on behalf of his god. Well, Pathfinder brings us the concept of Archetypes that switch around the abilities of most classes. Some archetypes are completely fucking aweful(Read: EVERY cleric archetype), while others are godlike(Master Summoner, Monk of the Four Winds). And then there's this sucker, the Empyreal Knight. Be ready for rage
Empyreal Knights[edit]
Empyreal Knights are pretty simple. They're a paladin archetype that begins level 1 as a perfectly ordinary paladin. But at level 3, they gain the Summoner Class Feature: Summon Monster. With the notable exception that they can only summon things that can have the Celestial Template tacked on. This replaces their Lay On Hands ability.
At later levels, they start gaining a Celestial Template, in exchange for losing Disease Immunity. If you're not rageing right now, then you probably don't even know what that is.
Everything else is perfectly normal for them, they still have Paladin Spells, and all the rest of their immunities.
Wait, why is this a bad thing?[edit]
The Summoner Class Feature technically means they can take feats that similarly buff their summoned creatures. Most notably Celestial Summons(Makes it a standard Action). Empowered Summons(Summoned monsters are stronger than the real ones), and Extra Summons(Exactly what it says on the tin, each rank makes you summon one more monster with each cast, you can take it 4 times). NOT EVEN WIZARDS CAN DO THIS
The celestial template only means they lose their Disease Immunity, but over the course of a few levels it gives them the following:
- Resistance 10, Cold Acid Electricity
- Truespeech
- Immunity to Petrification
- Spell Resistance
This is in addition to certain buffs that Angels give to the party. If you purchase a certain ring that increases the list of things you can summon, Empyreal Knights can summon Monadic and Movanic Devas. Both of which have Spells Per Day that you can use. They can also summon a metric ton of Lantern Archons, which fire Touch-Attack LASERS.
- If healing is required. An Empyreal Knight can summon up to 20 Monadic Devas, which can cast HEAL once per day. Which automatically heals for 80 points. That means they can outheal clerics and druids. This totals out to a maximum healing amount of 1600 points per day. Your DM will strangle you while trying to figure out how to actually kill the party.
- Need tanks? Summon Celestial EMPOWERED DIRE TIGERS, Each one has 100 points of health, and aren't too shabby either in combat with their celestial template. At equal level, they'll out-tank the fighter in most cases. A good empyreal knight can summon a total of 40 of these per day.
- Need to kill something fast? Dire Tigers actually, they do the same job.
- Out-ranged damage the ranger? How does 7 Lantern Archons, firing 14 Ranged Touch Attacks for 1d8+40 damage a shot, hitting THAC10 with a 60% chance.
