Beyond this point lies a concept in rage-causing form. Honestly, just skip it and look at the shiny artifacts.

Background[edit]

Unlike most people, Mel had a problem. A serious problem. He had a brother. Unfortunately, this brother resided in his own body and occasionally argued about who's body this really was and get the hell out this is mine. Like family tends to do they sometimes took it to hammer and tongs.

Considering they occupied the same head, this lead to... difficulties in normal development. Nonetheless, the surprised parents took this as a sign their child had been blessed instead of having been driven mad by some demonic entities. After all the two of them were able to differentiate between themselves, and accepted the fact they tended to disagree about almost absolutely everything.

This was likely more due to the fact that the parents were A. peasants B. the child was able to work and C. an inability to have another child than any particular belief in divinity.

So life went on with a surprised blink and then a shrug, living in rich farmlands tucked away to the East. After negative responses in their own village, Mel and Hephastus decided it would be best to keep their arguments less physical and out of sight from others. A particular lifestyle supplemented by the decision to have "solo" foraging forays into the deep forest.

Life went on. He excelled at reaping the various bounties the forest had, but after awhile he began to discover the things he caught for food became both more frequent... and significantly stranger. A worrisome change in such an area he brought it up with the village elder. Who promptly beat him with a stick for arguing with himself and then sent him on his way.

Later a behemoth ate the entire village. Mel and Hephastus came back to find the enormous beast snoozing in a comparatively small ditch where the village used to be.

"Well, bugger." They both said in mutual agreement. They couldn't let this stand! Two young man(?) with vengeance in their heart couldn't let that stand. So they swore upon that day to find a way to find and destroy that creature.

They left rapidly after taking a pot shot into one of it's eyes.

To the nearest village, where they stopped and warned, then to the next, repeating the task. People moved around. Local users of the occult and priests showed up to place numerous warning signs, along with helping people avoid such troubles. Mel firmly held onto a post as Hephastus attempted to leave so he could take the time to talk with these men about getting rid of larger, more dangerous beasts.

They were told glorious stories of the First Age, of their wonderful devices and creations; how many had been lost. Even regaled with an ancient poem of how a Manse may even exist nearby! This was all well and good. After all, who knew the forest better?

Apparently the poem failed to account for such a place sinking into a swamp. It also failed to account for the fact that the only bridge had burned down, along with all original entrances crumbling into rubble. Fortunately, the swamp failed to account for an excess of rubble and local slow-moving beasts being used as stepping stones.

Within the depths of this leaky, decrepit Manse they discovered it was much bigger than either had really expected. How deep was this damnable place anyway?! Hephastus wanted to turn back after a few days. Mel insisted they could find something of use, despite the rampant destruction... but lack of bodies. It was a wonder they weren't eaten alive by ghosts. At the very bottom, food nearly gone, and having to supplement whatever they could find... they found two items.

A glowing rod entrapped within cage, with glittering lines creating runes extending in every direction.

A black sword that simply Was Not; a weapon that appeared to not be there, something their eyes slid off of. It sat blade-first in a pile of dust, nearby a sheath. Hephastus wanted to take the rod. Mel wanted the sword. They both reached out to grasp each item at the same time.

Their was a moment of agonizing, extreme pain, and the sound of several screams. When they finally came to the rod had turned gray. But did it not once shine? The blade was in it's sheathe. Their bones were broken in several places. Surrounding them were statues of horribly warped people gradually shifting into powder before fading away entirely. Disoriented and in pain they escaped. Shadows and things just around the corner seemed to be watching... and waiting.

Even once they left, their dreams were disturbed. Sometimes they felt something right around the corner, waiting. Heph wished to discard the sword. It was clearly the sword. Mel wished to discard the staff. It was clearly the source of these nightmares. But sometimes... Mel heard whispers.

Nonetheless, they managed to find the Behemoth. After traps and poisons, they were forced into a corner. They drew both weapons, screamed, and charged. Mel fought aggressively and demonically, a changed being that Heph could not understand. But Heph defended with the staff, re-directing blows and shifting attacks with arcane energies that took all his attentions.

Then in a last agonizing moment they stood victorious, cheered by their victory... and there was an agonizing moment as they were literally ripped in half by the forces that had previously sustained them.

In that moment, Mel was Mel, and Hephastus was Hephastus.

And unto Mel came a voice that promised new life, and the strength to wield both weapons again and again. He distantly heard Hephastus's silent-voice telling him not to do so, despite that they were now separate.

He took the offer anyway. And Hephastus left.

tl;dr Schizo peasant became hunter, hunter's village was ate, hunter worked to prevent fates on other villages (not always successfully), hunter found Manse. Hunter found two items and used them to kill Behemoth that ate village. Hunter exploded messily, personalities became separate entities. Mel-half took the Last Breath.
