The miniatures shown here are purposely made to be lower-quality, in order to minimize costs in the boxed set. The vast majority of the miniatures are sculpted with much higher quality and made with pewter. Thanks to the use of hexboards, though, proxies and tokens can be used without worry, so long as there is a recognizable front end.

The hexmaps allow for for faster movement phases and range determination than one would have with a board without spaces, but eliminate the issues that can arise from diagonal movements and range determination that can arise from standard grids. Naysayers complaints often include "Counting Hexes" or "Lack of 90º turns".
