Remove the DCTE thingi?[edit]
The M25, while being a airburst grenade launcher, is not even similar to the bolter, Bolters are gyrojet launchers while the DCTE is still just a grenade launcher, just with an airburst function. Only inferno bolts have airburst rounds and they are rare.
Where is this coming from?[edit]
Where the hell is this information coming from?
"Thus the Bolter manages to be much more deadly than the lasgun or autogun, both of which hit you with more force than a high velocity 30mm armor piercing shell and can make a man pop like a overfilled water balloon. If the Lasgun hits you with the force of a high velocity 30mm armor piercing shell, then the Bolter will hit you with the force of a high velocity 200mm rocket;"
A lasgun does NOT hit with as much force as a 30mm round. Autoguns are equivalent to MODERN firearms with a SMALLER caliber and caseless rounds. And a bolter dose NOT hit with the force of a 200mm rocket! Behold, a 152mm howitzer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/152_mm_towed_gun-howitzer_M1955_%28D-20%29 You're telling me a bolter hits with the force of something stronger than that?
"The average Ork boy has a very good chance of just walking off direct hits from lasguns and autoguns and probably would find the experience of being shot at by a modern day assault rifle to be about as threatening as venomless bee stings."
I would say it's a lot stronger than that. Str 3 may need a 5+, but I'm pretty sure bees would need at least a 7.
"thusly, rather than just putting a hole into enemies who would scoff at (like) an M2 Browning .50cal Machine Gun, it blows them to tiny bits."
What? No? Just... what? See above.
TL;DR obviously the bolter is powerful. More powerful than the lasgun and autogun. But the specs presented here (trying to be "funny" or not) are ridiculous. CrazyThang 21:43, 6 July 2011 (UTC)
30mm Auto cannon>? sounds like a guy used to arguing over at star destroyer net (where X- wings fire an atomic holocaust with every shot) Honestly though in both games term and nearly all the story a str 3 lasgun is roughly equal to a battle rifle were a str 3 auto stubber is about the same as an assault rifle. Bolters are kinda random as different authors describe them differently but I would say their explode like a 30mm grenade with rifle velocity.
I would say bolter its just an automatic grenade launcher (something like HK GMW). And about bolter round velocity, initially it is very low, but increasing over trajectory (just like gyrojet and majority of rockets). Only way to instantly achieve high velocity is to use two staged round. First stage - classic gunpowder; second -miniaturized rocket.
Okay, lolwhut edit for mad lels.
Bolter is ~20mm anti-tank round....but explodes inside. Go have a look at a 20mm anti-tank round, then look at the bolter specs. No, bolter initial velocity wouldn't be low at all, or that would suck for many different kinds of reasons. The initial charge gives it enough velocity to get out of the barrel, then the rocket kicks in, and damn right they should be supersonic despite the Dan Abbetry supersonic vs. subsonic rounds.
There is ZERO reason for a bolt round to be subsonic ever. Hitting zombies and worried about it going through them so fast it doesn't get a chance to explode?
Well, that's what cavitation is for.
/k/ommando here, I'd like to add that the typical muzzle velocity of a 12 gauge shotgun slug weighing 1 ounce and out of a typical 20 inch barrel is around 1200 mph or mach 1.5ish. A bolt shell, leaving the barrel at mach 1.5 and keeping (not even increasing the bolt's velocity for this example) that same speed for say 1 kilometer would only experience significant ballistic drop once the secondary propellant ran out. A supersonic muzzle velocity would also be needed to keep any form of accuracy as going from subsonic to supersonic creates a massive pressure wave that would send the bolt off target. As well as maintaining any level of lethality (in the 40k universe) at close range. Its the same reason the Gyrojet never got developed further, it needed too much distance to get to lethal speeds to be a reliable weapon. You need supersonic velocities out of the muzzle or it's going to be inaccurate at long distances, and of limited lethality at close ranges. And considering that the bolt's fuze is supposed to be "mass reactive" could mean it's detecting density changes of whatever it's passing through. Thus limiting the risk of over penetration in soft targets or very light armor.
Quick question[edit]
Wouldn't the recoil of bolters rip off a mere man's arms?
- It actually has little recoil. The gun only launches the bolt, whereafter the bolt itself starts flying, so the only real problem with it is that it's heavy as fuck TheWiseDane (talk) 10:39, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
- The fluff says otherwise, but it's inconsistent. I've (amongst other edits to clean up and organize things) added a section on the recoil. The point of the initial propellant kick is not just to get the bolt clear of the barrel, but to give the bolt close range lethality, something that real-life gyrojets suffered from a lack of. I think it's clear that boltguns won't tear your arms off, but that's what's said all over the place (just look at the lexicanum article on bolters, where they repeat the meme four times). The FFG rules, counter examples like Harken, and plain old logic really state that the recoil is not as bad as it (used to be?) is said to be. This debate, or whatever it is, I think it's notable enough to have a section in the article. I'd love an actual fluff source reference for the 'tear your arms off' idea though. I see that repeated over and over in fan discussions. --HK (talk) 13:17, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
No Condemnor Boltgun?
New Bolt Carbines and the Bolt Sniper[edit]
With Shadowspear, we got the release of the Marksman, Occulus and Instigator Bolt Carbines and the MKIII Shrike-pattern Bolt Sniper rifles. Do we not want to add them to the page now, and update as a full releaase for them comes and new rules in perhaps a Marines Dex MKII the way Chaos got their Second Printing, or however GW will wind up spamming books, or just wait till they are fully released? 31.185.36.116 17:35, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
