Talk:Chaplain

So who compares favourably to Chaplains in terms of badass marines? How is it skub? -- Triacom (talk) 01:10, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- In the initial edit, I used Techmarines (badass techno-super warriors with Doctor-Octopus style arms) and specialist Captains, like Lord Executioners (badass super warriors with jetbacks and FUCKHUEG axes). Anyway, Chaplains are burdened by their connection to the excessively Catholic and gothic Ecclesiarchy, which many aren't too fond of (I have a buddy at my FLGS who uses proxies or doesn't field them for their aesthetic). --Kracked Mynd (talk) 03:45, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- I'm not seeing it to be honest, the Chaplains have a slight connection to the Ecclesiarchy, and suddenly they're not as cool? The connection is part of what makes them warrior monks (more so than the other marines) and it helps them in keeping the other marines on the straight and narrow. I also wouldn't call the Ecclesiarchy "Catholic" by any means aside from imagery. As for your other suggestions, you might be the first and only person I've ever heard who would try and claim techmarines are the coolest marine. It would be as if I asked you "What's your favourite thing about your car?" Then you said: "My mechanic." The techmarines look fine, but those extra arms aren't meant for anything beyond heavy lifting (even if they improvise with them) and they're far more hung up with a religious organization than the Chaplains are. Executioners on the other hand are just Captains, Chaplains can get their gear too while still looking better. -- Triacom (talk) 04:12, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- I certainly am surprised that I'm your first experience with Techmarine love. I am obsessed with them, and I've certainly met other people who think they are fucking badass too (which encompasses the more unique and imaginative religious beliefs and aesthetic of the Machine Cult vs that of the Ecclesiarchy. --Kracked Mynd (talk) 13:56, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- I like how you used the words "unique" and "imaginative" to describe the techmarines, two words they and their religion hate with a passion. The reason I don't like them is because they have all of the negatives a Magos has with none of the positives. They're on the same level as Enginseers as far as I'm concerned and anything you like them for I guarantee there's an AdMech model who does it better. -- Triacom (talk) 19:31, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- The same could be used for Chaplains. I think that their beatstick looks silly and they're overdone, and upholding morale and being all about the God-Emperor are done better by Commissars (who are more badass aesthetically) and Priests (who shoot heretics while reading and screaming at the top of their lungs while unarmored in a battle is much cooler). The point is, we have differing opinions, and are generating some serious skub-energy, so it's worth keeping the link. --Kracked Mynd (talk) 19:45, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- Their crozius is literally whatever you want it to be, don't like it's look? Then feel free to make it a sword or axe, the maul version is just the most common. As far as your Commissar point goes, that's not the duty of a Chaplain. They're not all about the Emperor and it's not their job to keep morale high (Marines don't need that function anyway), instead their duties include making sure the Marines stay on the straight and narrow, as I've already mentioned. This includes the role of counselor if they need to take to Marines about either their egos (in case the Marines start getting an inflated one) or in getting them to work better with one another as a team. You don't usually see this in the Codices because it's a non-combat function, but it does show up in the books. Finally skub is something reserved for things people either love or hate, and I don't think we're there yet. -- Triacom (talk) 20:57, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- I'll take you on the skub, but I'll agree to disagree on the Chaplain vs Techmarine (the Techmarine can also have whatever equipment you want him to, like a wrench ala Rogue Trader or a rockin' pimp gun like the Thunderfire Cannon. --Kracked Mynd (talk) 23:19, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- I don't recall the Techmarines being able to get jump packs, terminator armour, a Rosarius, and taking on (let alone beating the shit out of) and capturing Chaos Lords who were able to kill Chapter Masters. I am undoing your most recent edit on the main page however as there's a lot of people I know who think Chaplains are great, and you're still the only person I've heard who thinks Techmarines are the best Space Marine. If you want to change that then you should put it on /tg/ and ask them which is cooler, though I've got a feeling I know who they'll side with. -- Triacom (talk) 23:40, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks much, not many editors have the guts to go strait the boards to win a fight. I'll edit the article myself once the post is archived. --Kracked Mynd (talk) 00:20, 14 February 2019 (UTC) edit: Not gonna lie, I count one anon who's said Techmarines are cool other than me (and given that the poster count doesn't match replies accounting for my two, it looks like it's someone trolling), so things are swinging your way. --Kracked Mynd (talk) 00:34, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- It's a bit too early to tell, but I can guarantee that there are currently more people in there voting chaplains at the moment. We'll have to wait and see. -- Triacom (talk) 00:42, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- Really quickly too, I can also guarantee I'm not anon No.64618653 or anyone who comments on your dislike of the aesthetic (I share their opinion on it though) and I didn't bring that up in the OP because it would basically have me win by default, given how it's one of the most popular things about 40k. -- Triacom (talk) 00:47, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- I figured (and hoped) not. You seem like a respectable fa/tg/uy (or ca/tg/irl, none of my business), and I assumed you wouldn't attack an argument based on what you aesthetically like (even though I actually do like gothic (or romanesque in the anon's case) style, I just think that in most SM armies, barring the various Angels, it's too gaudy; my first SM army was DA, in fact). Either way, there's only two anons right now who have said that they like Techmarines, so you're on point on this one vro. --Kracked Mynd (talk) 03:26, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- It's getting pretty late here in Americaland, so Imma turn in. I'll check the thread in the morning and change the article accordingly. --Kracked Mynd (talk) 03:58, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- The thread isn't archived yet, but Imma go ahead with the extreme majority so far and say that Chaplains are the consensus. --Kracked Mynd (talk) 15:03, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- It's archived now, at the very least I think we can both admit the concept of Iron Fathers are pretty great (they're a combo of Chaplain and Techmarine). -- Triacom (talk) 18:00, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- Absolutely. The idea of a Scottish hardass who has a hard on for tech is pretty fucking dope. --Kracked Mynd (talk) 18:03, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
