A hauberk places 100% of the weight on the shoulders, slightly less if you have a solid belt around your waist. Plate is way more distributive. "Better than nothing" against spears and stabs is also pretty bullshit. Solid, period half-riveted half-solid chainmail is an absolute pain to pierce, especially with the gambeson behind it.
