Talk:Morrworld

From 1d4chan

Many years ago I DM'd a group of friends in an AD&D campaign (they decided to run Evil characters) that lasted for over twenty years. Veterans of D&D would think that after twenty years they should be nearly god-like characters but I ran my campaign in a world where the general populace was protected from marauding players by certain servants who would show up and warn PC's not to fuck around to much or face the consequences. Nothing was said about visiting other worlds or planes, however.

A few years ago I decided to start writing about these characters and their accomplishments. I'm not a trained writer so it's difficult for me to structure what I write.

They had such diverse backgrounds and fit in with an over-all idea I had for a "tumultuous era" in Morrworld's history so every session was interesting, exciting and allowed for a lot of role playing.

For those of you who think the mechanics should dictate balance I'm proof that a "world" can create balance in a game. I used most of the elements of AD&D but borrowed ideas from other versions to add diversity without losing the "feel" of AD&D. For instance: I didn't use the Feats from the newer versions but that didn't mean characters couldn't learn the equivalent of Feats as they gained levels. I had no structure or tables to reflect this but my system still worked and players were pleasantly surprised when they did gain some sort of new ability.

Another case in point: I still used the old way to roll up a Magic-user (Mage); d4 HD, one spell at 1st level, etc., there was nothing stopping a player from gaining power using a weak PC as long as you did it intelligently. After all, it's supposed to be a smart character...run it in a smart way.

Some of the weakest PC's became known as heroes in my campaign. It just takes some work and patience.

I digress. We had so much fun with these evil characters that I would often email my buddy (also my cousin) and ask if he could remember any specific events or quests just so I could write about them.

A little background on the characters[edit]

Nykuss (AKA Nykuss daemus, Nykass, among other names) - A power hungry son of a Doge (something like a senator) from a large city who had access to any sort of education he desired. Also, very intelligent but hid it just enough not to arouse suspicion. He became the leader of the group and sucked everyone down with him when he fell to extreme evil. He was so good at gathering information on others (for use later) that he was able to manipulate the group for his own needs and at the same time make them feel like they were still controlling their own destinies.

He was able to have his own father assassinated, blame it on the leader of a Mage cult, and take over the cult all in one move to control his own destiny.

Rowina (former Queen of the Drow) - Got talked into a crusade (by a being claiming to be Hecate) to change the religion of the Drow. This didn't work out as planned. She barely avoided being assassinated, survived a journey to the surface world, and ended up taking refuge with Nykuss. He promised to help her get revenge on the religious leaders of the Drow and in return she would teach him some of their secrets. She turned out to be somewhat crazy, chaotic, deadly, cruel, a user of other's emotions and weaknesses but loyal to the group as a whole. She often mocked Nykuss who let her get away with it because he needed her.

Bard Ulmstone (my cousin and I decided on this name because we couldn't remember his real name and the player lives in another Province so fuck it) - Left his homeland for a better station in life (I guess being the son of a successful Lord wasn't good enough for him). He made his way to Nykuss' lands and struck up a friendship with him. Nykuss decided he'd make a good Captain and defender when the Mage was off discovering new shit. Bard also fell in love with the she-bitch Rowina who strung him along at every opportunity. She must have liked him at least a little because she didn't cut his nuts off when he touched her hair one night during a chance meeting away from everyone else. Of everyone in the group Bard was the least fucked up but ended up being drawn into their plans (unfortunately for him).

Bromm (a big fucking warrior) - Nykuss found Bromm wondering around on his own, with no memory of his past. Bromm was seven feet tall and the strongest man any had seen. He didn't talk much but was surprisingly smart when he did decide to say something. Nykuss began to suspect Bromm wasn't a normal human (not just because he strangled a Troll with his arms) when his skin tone darkened as he got older and his eyes changed from dark brown to toxic green. He also had the constitution of a bull and could take a beating. He stayed loyal to Nykuss on the condition the Mage would research his past (if he could).

Phammon (Phammin) of Woe - Nykuss locked himself away for a few months after discovering a book titled: Blackstar. It was this book that launched him on a career of Evil, Badness and just plain wrong-doing. From this book he learned many things, including how to create his very own Evil Undead. He really fucked over Bard when he unveiled Phammon as Bard recognized the ancestral Great Sword his Brother used to wield. But Bard couldn't say shit because Nykuss knew many things about him (including the fact that it was Bard that got Phammon killed during a battle when he decided to save his own skin instead of fighting along side his brother).

There's so much more to the story and their adventures so I'll not bore you any more.
