Actually, the paladin, just like most everything else, has been straight copy-pasted from fantasy literature popular at the time - in this case, from Three Hearts and Three Lions by Poul Anderson, along with the Law/Chaos-thing, and arguably even the multiverse thing (he was earlier in both these things than Moorcock). Of course, that, in turn, is based upon Matter-of-France-stuff, but Anderson gives it the whole shebang including Lay on Hands, holy anti-magic being-shit that can fail you when you don't keep up the morals thing (of course, in Anderson that mostly included nasty thoughts) and arguably the appearance out of thin air of a Divine Steed, armor and weapons plus appropriate proficiencies the very moment the protagonist accidentally multiclasses from engineer/resistance fighter into Pala
