I can actually answer that pretty easily. The Vecna series is great if you're a huge Greyhawk fan who loves Vecna and loves having an epic planes-spanning adventure centered around him. If you are a Planescape or Ravenloft fan who literally cares more about Vecna's severed hand and eye than about him, it's one long string of having the big cosmic characters you love from settings you love being effortlessly shown up by this obnoxious johnny-come-lately who's blatantly disobeying the established rules of the individual settings via dubious fan-wank to do it in what seems to be an obvious and obnoxious application of "My favorite character is better than yours!
