Talk:Simple D6 - Second Edition

From 1d4chan

Hey Shadowplay, what do you think of this?

This is a barebones sanity mechanic me and my buddy have been using with Simple_D6: Every player starts with 1 insanity point. In situations that would cause sanity loss (Seeing the dead rise, witnessing a cult ceremony, summoning of something that Should Not Be) the player rolls 1d6. If they equal to or under their sanity, they hold it together well enough. If they roll higher than their current insanity, they fail, and add one to their current insanity. If a player reaches 6 insanity, hes basically loses all rational function, and is completely incurably insane.

On top of this, on a failed roll, we've been house-ruling that the player must now choose a Fight or Flight response; Either throw caution to the wind and attack whatever you can, or run as far as you can with no regard for anything else.

Cheers by the way, for an awesome and simple system. Its been working great so far for my group, running short campaigns and one shots (Mostly horror based).

Looks amazing! Great for a horror type game and very CoC-esque (which should be much more about the story than an advanced system anyway imo). Looks like a sweet way to incoorporate Lovecraftian Horror into the system. If you dont mind, Ill try and find a place for it in the 1-page Q&A of the upcoming 3rd edition.

I deciced against using it as you wrote - I think what you wrote is great and gives a much better feeling of player advocacy than what I ended up doing. Instead I made it just like any other Aspect (ie with HP and Defense). I honestly would just houserule your rule into my games instead but writing your rule into the Q&A would fundamentally change the fact that "in SD6 EVERYTHING is dont the exact same way". I hope people will house rule what they disagree with and I have actually considered making an extra page worth of Q&A so I can incoorporate your idea as well but it feels like it would take away from the "1 page concept" of the game. I will definatly add it in an expansion, like the Cyberpunk expansion I made, when I get around to making a CoC-type expansion - or better yet, you can make one if you want to. I never played too many CoC games so it sounds like you would have a better fundamental knowledge of what works, what themes are at play and why. Ill gladly help you with any rules speculations you have.

Ill also make sure to check in on this page (and the 3rd edition page) once per week minimum from now on and otherwise, feel free to use my mail which is further down.

I made a character sheet I'm not quite too sure how good it is. Now in index card form!

Awesome, that really helps with the visualisation. Great work! - Shadowplay - date October 30, 2012

So I updated Simple_D6 and decided to make it even broader and improve it in a lot of ways (spelling included).

Now I am looking for ideas for expansions to it - expansions to give inspirations for different settings to be more precise. So far I am planning expansions for:

  • Combat
  • High Fantasy
  • Low Fantasy
  • Mideval
  • Cyber Punk
  • Steam Punk
  • Modern
  • Modern Zombie Survival (I might ditch this one seeing as it is already covered somewhat by Modern)
  • Western

Keeping true to style, all expansions will only be a 1 a4 page expansion to keep it as simple as possible. Suggestions or contributions are very welcome

Disclaimer: I'm a random anon dumping an idea.

Vehicles:

Stuff like powered armour and mini mechs simply boost AC and certain skills like 'punch'. HP of the armour is low, but only used to calculate disabling effects of called shots, in the sense that wrecking the armour to slow down the wearer is possible. Otherwise, player HP is used.

Bigger vehicles have their own HP. Armoured vehicles get dmg reduction, fast dodgers simply get high AC.

Should players want to disable or otherwise only wreck a piece of a vehicle, the DM imposes a penalty dependent on how hard the component is to hit.

Example build:

Name: Gouf Custom Melee type

Base HP: 130

Base AC: 11

Base Damage Red. : -5

Equipment

Mech Sword: +2d6 to all Melee rolls, +25 dmg on hit, melee only.

Buster Wrist Gun: +3d6 to Melee Attack rolls, no bonus to ranged attacks.

License for the Simple d6 system[edit]

So, let's say for a second, I really like the simple d6 system (which I do, my friends and I have ran a number of successful campaigns on it) and want to create a modified sd6 system for a specific setting from it, and then turn that into a commercial product. I know that all content here is published under the GNU Free Documentation License 1.3, which, as a form of copyleft, would require me to publish my system under the same license. This license, although allowing commercial adaptations, would be a huge pain in my neckbeard, considering the rules on redistribution (including for commercial purposes). So my questions are:

  • 1d4chan wiki text is published under GNU FDL, but does that mean the system itself is GNU FDL? Otherwise, what is it?
  • Depending on the answer to the above, is it possible to publish/re-publish simple d6 under the Open Game License (OGL)?

The OGL would still carry the requirement that I source 1d4chan (gladly!) and republish as an OGL game, but the OGL is built for roleplaying systems, and would be much safer commercially than GNU Free Doc.

I know legal stuff like this sucks but I'm really inspired to make something out of this system. If I can't get it under OGL, I still play to release it under GNU FDL once I've got it made, but it means it could never become a major business—which means no large amounts of supplementary material, printed books, etc.

Thoughts? --Dudleythesquire 17:50, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

I am not a lawyer, but it seems to me that if you wanted to license the Simple d6 system under a license other than the GNU FDL, you would need to arrange that with the copyright owner of the system (most likely Shadowplay, but you'd have to check to be sure -- and if you wanted to use the character sheet or index card, you would probably have to arrange that with Minty). Since he's the only contributor to the article, that makes it much easier to port the content to another license (as he's the only person whose permission you would need).
On the other hand, the system might not necessarily fall under copyright -- according to the U.S Copyright Office, only "the particular manner of an author’s expression in literary, artistic, or musical form" is protected by copyright, not the system itself.
If I'm reading all this correctly, printing out the one-page rules image and selling it would not be OK, but using the system or basing a system off of it would be (look to e.g. OSRIC for precedent -- but watch out for names of statistics or rules concepts, examples of play, and other fluffy bits -- those probably are protected, since they're "expression in literary form," not an integral part of the system itself).
Of course, if you're serious about this, get a real lawyer, etc. --Not LongPoster Again 05:30, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you very much! Once I've got something initial built, were I to move forward with this commercially, I would definitely spend some good time with a lawyer. However, this did a fantastic job of providing a bit of information, precedent, and hope, thank you!
On that note, how would I get in contact with Shadowplay? I've been lurking for a while, but this is my first time actually saying anything, and I'm not sure exactly how things work. Some quick googling indicates most MediaWikis don't have private messaging. Am I missing something, or?
Thanks again --Dudleythesquire 17:50, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
I think Shadowplay is kind of a sporadic user here, you might have some more luck posting a thread on /tg/ itself to see if you can find him, but thats a one in a million shot.
Minty, I know is a user on reddit, he posted to /r/rpg about the index card he created. Send him a PM over there if you want to talk to him.
And semi unrelated, but fuck, isn't Sd6 the greatest system ever? As of late Ive put aside my expensive rulebooks and just pulled out the page with the rules on it and run some oneshots for friends. Everyone loves it. --Kerbobotat 23:36, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
I just came around and read this by chance. You can get a hold of me by writing me a mail at skyggespil [at) gmail DoT com and Ill check it out. I am working on a 3rd edition of SD6 (which is almost finished). If you are interested in a collaboration, I´d be more than happy to help set up something.
I use reddit a little but Im mostly at 4chans /tg/ board so if you write there (especially about 1page rule systems) I will usually notice the thread. My Shadowplay account on reddit have inexplicablly been made inaccessable and I cant seem to recover the password so Im using EtherealBeaver as my nick instead but then again - im rarely on reddit anyway.
Also, Im really happy that people like the system. It just runs so smoothly for me as well that its just easier to use then having to read up on new systems all the time.
If you guys have any suggestions or feedback, fire away and Ill see if I can fit it into future editions as well.
