Talk:Spear

7 meters? So we're talkin' 22 feet of spear there... I think this might need to be double checked folks....

According to some scholarly, well-researched sources (wikipedia) they actually got up to like 25 feet. This is almost certainly a very niche, uncommon case though.
Not as bad as you'd think. Many spears of such length bear a heavy counterweight at the non-pointy end, and were always wielded with both hands. Alexander's phalanxes along with a lot of Renaissance pike formations used such long spears, which worked damn well with well-disciplined troops in tight groups.

At the end this bit seems weird- Spears are often portrayed as being used underhand, meaning that if you point your fist outwards the tip is pointing down. This is not a good idea; it creates an incredibly unwieldy angle to use your weapon at, limits your thrusting strength and does not allow you to stab as far as an overhand grip. Shouldn't that be overhand at the start and underhand at the end? Or is this just referring to shorter one-handed spears? --FatherDuke (talk) 20:50, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
