Talk:Tanar'ri
Great add, Biggus Bearus, whatever its need for editing and details. I'll work on it, when I'm not feeling too lazy. --SpectralTime (talk) 18:58, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah, thanks for the help. Do note that I left the likes of Pazuzu, Dagon, Pale Night and Ox Whatever out of the Demon Lords list on account of them being Obyrith and not Tanar'ri. Oh, and I forgot to add in Miska the Wolf-Spider. He'll be in there later. - Biggus Berrus (talk) 00:20, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
Tanar'ri vs Demon Prince[edit]
So, since there's an actual page on Demon Princes now and it's trying to spin off all of the Demon Princes into their own articles, how do we tidy up its existence vs that page? Make this page about the specific breeds of Tanar'ri (Balor, Quasit, etc) and have short blurbs + links to the succubus and demon prince template pages? It'd be really helpful if we could figure this out, as otherwise the two pages are just going to keep on existing at cross-angles. --QuietBrowser (talk) 02:01, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
- Sounds good. I've moved the Demon Princes to their page and started adding some of the Tanar'ri to this page. - Biggus Berrus (talk) 16:12, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
Category confusion[edit]
Can anybody explain what the distinction between least, lesser, greater, and true tanar'ri are? I have been working on adding tanar'ri that are missing from the list and I have been having to guess which one they belong to based on their challenge rating. I have been reading from 3rd edition books and I haven't seen anything about this. Also, I have noticed that some tanar'ri on this page that are classed as lesser tanar'ri are stronger that some that are in greater tanar'ri and there are also some in greater tanar'ri that are stronger than some in true tanar'ri. Is this due to mistakes or due to changes between editions or something else?--2601:203:480:4C60:E073:949:4FE0:23C7 04:50, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
- Can't say where the classifications are from. The only hint of this classification I'm aware of in 3E is mentions that some least members are missing certain traits that would normally be given by the subtype. I'd say just create a new section called "Un-Categorized Tanar'ri" before Ex-Tanar'ri and put in all Tanar'ri that aren't given a classification. It should be easy enough to move them to the right section if it turns out they are given a category elsewhere. --Agiletek (talk) 03:13, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
- The divisions of Tanar'ri into such categories came about in AD&D 2e, as part of the Planescape line; they might be descended from the "Type X" classification for demons from OD&D, but I don't know. I think the only splatbook that might talk about them are Faces of Evil: The Fiends and the Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendixes... even there, there's no real definition as to WHY a tanar'ri is sorted into those categories, the whole thing is just pretty arbitrary and loosely tied to power level. Faces of Evil is definitely worth checking out... but don't expect a lot of useful advice.--QuietBrowser (talk) 04:21, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
