Great War[edit]

NOTE, THIS PAGE IS A WORK IN PROGRESS!!!!

Oh its a lovely war!

'Great War' is a sub game of 'Flames of War' published by the Kiwis from Battlefront. The game focusses on the final year of the war on the Western European front, just as many armies were starting to fully catch on to the idea of mechanisation. The games consists of five factions, The British Commonwealth, France, Germany, USA and as an add on, and not great for competitive play, the Belgians. Perhaps the Battlefront game with the smallest player base, good luck finding anyone to play with. It is also less car-parky than other versions of Flames, with most vehicles costing *a lot* and being in independent teams. You are lucky if you can field 3 tanks, three infantry platoons then various support options.

The Game[edit]

The game is essentially the same as Flames of War, just with more of an infantry focus. Tanks also are more terrifying, harder to kill, but a few rounds from a machine gun is enough to keep them away.

Playing a game[edit]

Table size

Games of Great War are fought on smaller tables than most regular wargames, only requiring a 4'x4' table for 100 point games. This helps to better represent the fact that most small actions were fought across a very narrow salient, rather than wide open plains.

Game size

As mentioned before, you are lucky if you can get loads of things on the table. Games tend to have a lot less figures than required for Flames or America Squad. For example, my personal list for 100 points only has two platoons of infantry, two tanks, several mortar stands and a pair of individual machine guns. And unlike Flames or Team Yankee, this would be considered a very strong force. You can also expect to be taking LOTS of infantry.

Artillery

Artillery works slightly differently in Great War. Whilst in Flames or Team Yankee, you have large batteries on call at all times, in games of Great War you are luck if you can bring a single gun and some mortars, and that gun is being wasted if it is not being used for anti-tank work. However, before a game the attacker does get a Preparatory Bombardment, which results in all of the defenders units being pinned.

Turns

Refer to the Team Yankee or Flames pages for this, as the game works in the same way.

Types of List[edit]

All nations pretty much have similar lists, with there being;

Infantry (Line) formations.

Run of the mill conscripts fighting as there is not much else to do. These are the standard cheaper lists, and are great all rounders. They tend to include more defensive options and that is what they are best at.

Assault formations.

These are the guys who enjoy bayoneting. Assault formations are more expensive, but better, infantry which are much better at taking the fight to the enemy than the standard line infantry. Their formation support choices are also much more orientated to taking the fight to the enemy.

Breakthrough formations.

Cavalry. The lists for anyone mad enough to still be riding horses into battle. They are a middle ground between Line and Assault formations, with a high speed than both but generally their stats are more inline with the scum in the Line.

Formation support.

This is where you will find the hard hitters, so the tanks and large guns. There is also 'black box support' from both allies and your own force. Then there is the magical 'wildcard' that not even Battlefront themselves know what to do with.

Forces of the Great War[edit]

This covers the five nations, and the units available. There is no scoring of units like on the Team Yankee page, as Units in Great War tend to be more versatile.

Germany[edit]

"Gott Mitt Uns"

- Prussian military motto

The boys who started the whole thing. The Germans come into the game on the backfoot, but definitely are not giving in. They are one hella tough nut to crack on the defensive, and their Stosskompanie are perhaps the best assault troops in the whole game.

German forces in Great War are a jack-of-all-trades, with the ability to fill all roles given to them. They consist of four individual lists.

- Infanteriekompanie[edit]

- Siegfriedstellung[edit]

- Stosskompanie[edit]

- Jägerkompanie[edit]

Great Britain and the Commonwealth[edit]

"Home for tea and medals!"

- Lieutenant George, Blackadder goes forth.

The British army of 1918 is vastly different one. This army, which had entered the war a fully professional, but small, force. In 1918, it numbered 1.5 million men, a citizens army. It also contained divisions from Australia, Canada, India and other Imperial domains. Although growing war weary, these Bulldogs still have a lot of fight left in them, and it is in these battles that Britain showed the world a glimpse of the future, with combined armed attacks using tanks, infantry, artillery and aircraft to dominate the battlefield.

The Brits have 4 separate lists, all with a different role. In general, the Brits offer flexible forces that are good in all situations, but best in the offence.

- Line Division Rifle Company[edit]

"Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori"

- Elite Division Rifle Company[edit]

"Well tally ho! With a bing and a bong and a buzz buzz buzz!"

- ANZAC or Canadian Division Rifle Company[edit]

"I don’t care for the English, Scotch, French, Australians or Belgians but damn you Canadians, you take no prisoners!"

- Cavalry Squadron[edit]

"HUSSAH!!!"

France[edit]

"How can you govern a country which has 246 varieties of cheese?"

- Charles de Gaulle

- Compagnie de Fusiliers[edit]

- Compagnie de Fusiliers Russe[edit]

"Not one step back!"

- Escadron de Cavalerie[edit]

- Compagnie de Tirailleurs[edit]

- Harlem Hellfighters Rifle Company[edit]

USA[edit]

"I'm not the smartest fellow in the world, but I can sure pick smart colleagues."

- Franklin D. Roosevelt

The Yanks have arrived. They are sorry that they are a little late, and promise not to be ever again. However, they are here and here in force. They bring with them fresh troops that are willing to get stuck in and prove their worth to the Limeys and French. Using a mixture of French, British and American equipment, they are ready to enter the fray and pave the way to Berlin!

The USA are very good all round troops, with good motivation and a willingness to keep on moving under fire. Whilst the Regular doughboys of the 1st and 42nd are good all round troops, the Marines are ready to keep moving forwards, and are the best damn troops in the game, at a cost...

- 1st Infantry Division Rifle Company[edit]

"The Big Red One"

- 42nd Infantry Division Rifle Company[edit]

"Never forget the Rainbow Division!"

- 4th Marine Brigade[edit]

"Come on you sons of bitches! Do you want to live forever?"

Belgium[edit]
